Your repetitive strain injury tips wanted!

posted Wednesday, 11 January 2006
As a sufferer of RSI, a recent  thread on cre8asite about ways of easing the pain caused by repetitive strain injury caught my attention. A few people posted their tips for easing the pain which can be caused by constantly using a computer. Along with a few helpful links:

I also occasionally use Dragon Naturally Speaking by Nuance (formely ScanSoft) which is an awesome speech recognition program. I mainly use it for reports and writing long documents, but I do know a programmer who used it with great success with CF studio.

I know a few people with similar wrists complaints and we've discussed various techniques for easing the pain such as using a wrist support, having a footrest and having your keyboard flat. Although what seems to work for one person doesn't always work for another, I'm curious to find out if other people in the community have any tips on what works for them.

I've suffered with RSI in my wrists recently, and eventually found that all I needed to do was put a couple of books under my monitor to raise it up. The top edge of your screen should be at eye level.

Once I did this, the pain went away in about 3-4 days. Good luck.

Try this

I know two people who now swear by them. Takes a bit of getting used to but their wrists have thanked them.

Yoga-type stretching every night before I go to bed has done wonders for me. Nothing else worked.

Try lying on the floor with your legs straight up in the air against a wall, and then hold your arms straight out, palms pointed away from the wall, thumbs down, for 5 minutes.

Then sit straight up against the wall, and hold your arms straight out, again thumbs down, for 5 more minutes.

Breathing is very important during the stretching, breathe deeply, and hold it with your lungs filled with air for 5 seconds.

Alistair, I had forgotten about that, I have adjusted my screen height to see if that makes a difference.

John, I'm going to see if I can get hold (no pun intended) of the mouse you pointed me to.

Geoff, I've never tried anything Yoga type but I'll try the exercise you recommended.

Thanks guys
