To mac or not to mac that is the question

posted Wednesday, 25 October 2006
I've been toying with the idea of getting a Mac laptop - we actually have an old one - and I love bieng able to get down to the terminal window - the question is now that I need to replace my ageing Viao do I go for a Mac or not? Any recommendations - or horror stories from those that have made the transition

I have also been thinking about this - the new mac looks sweet! Let me know how it goes.

It is not an easy transition, especially if you are new to OSX. Getting CF running on there was a bit of an ordeal...but once you get everything set, you will never go back.

The thing is, if you have a MacBook Pro, you get the best of ALL worlds, if you get a PC... you get ... Windows. You know my opinions Kola.. check up with Andy Jarett with his experiences though!

I made the switch at the begining of summer and haven't looked back since. Within a week I was a Mac convertee, and this is from someone who had never used/owned one before. There is a ton of information out there there for you (including my site). Nearly all PC software can be found on the Mac, or at least some form of good alternative. One example is Office, I moved to OpenOffice thinking that it'll never be as good as the MS version or there would be compatability issues but so far nothing! And for the specific Windows only software there is parallels, which I use daily for my works VPN connection and Lotus Notes. Out of the box I gotta say its the best computer expirence I've had. One thing, make sure you go for 2gb of Ram though it makes the difference.

I'd go mac. Get the best of both worlds. THe MacBook Pros are now shipping with Core 2 Duos. Get a copy of Parallels, you have an XP license from your Viao, bam. there ya go.

My MBP is rockin! love it.

I haven't gone down the CF in OS X route yet, I just run CF, Tomcat and M$ SQL in my XP Virtual Machine.

I was very close to buying a mbp. For me I needed a bit more, and frankly and surprised that apple dropped the ball on the tv integration angle. With itunes and all the rest of the great software out there, it is a glaring omission.

I just recently bought an HP media center notebook. If I hadn't wanted media center I would have probably gone OS X. There just isn't a comparable tivo type functionality on OS X that I have seen and liked.

Hey Kola,

Go for it. I got MacBook (NOT pro) back in June and it is awesome. I have all Windows servers, so I just run CF on Parallels with MSSQL 2005 and that makes it much easier to get set up - the problems with CF are only if you want to run CF on the Mac part of your Mac.

If you don't need cool graphics, the very fastest chips or the connectivity options, consider the MacBook (much easier to lug around - the Pro is huge compared to my old 12.1 ultra-portable Dell). It is best value if it works for you. Otherwise the Pro is great.

The I's have it ;-)

Think I'm gonna give it a shot - I found a few resources to ease the transition.

I think taking out my chunky Viao at cfunited bieng surrounded by all those cool looking apps - was the last straw! That said the other thing I have been considering is a tablet PC - Once in a while my RSI flares up and I was thinking a tablet might help - do mac even make tablet PCs (sorry Tablet macs). My other half has an old Titanium mac around the house so I wont be total noob. :)
