1. sudo mii-tool -r
2. netcardconfig (as root) and configured my card to use DHCP and pick up an IP address from my router
3. ran ifconfig to retrieve my IP address and then pinged the IP address from my windows box which worked
4. started samba from the command line as root using sambastart and when prompted enabled all files to be mounted and shared
I went into windows network neighbourhood on my desktop PC - clicked on the Knoppix
share and entered the Knoppix username and password (not the root )
this gave me access to laptop and all the mounted harddisks, I then
simply copied all the files I wanted. Great
I was going to end this post saying that I was a bit dissapointed
that I couldn't get a internet connection up as that would be the only
thing stopping me from sticking with XP - but on a whim I tried a website again in firefox and it worked!!!! Knoppix
rocks!!!
A handy tool to have in your box!
It is very easy to work with it with certainty, and in Portuguese already
we have version 5
Yeah yu right...Windows rescue operation sucks badly. I had the same
experience when WinXP Blue Screen of Death came knocking. Thanks heavens
for Knoppix, using normal linux mount, i was able to use a 512MB USB drive
to siphon all the neccesary files b4 blanking out the DOS parent. Knoppix
is very handy.
hey kola nice blog...just discovered your blog and just came across a
problem i recently faced
Ah, excellent suggestion. Perfect timing too -- my Vaio decided last week
that it was going to die on startup all the time, and likewise I have gone
down the Knoppix route to save everything. I have been having issues not
being able to mount anything read/write to copy files across, so I think
it's time to try the samba option! Cheers.
Tim, you probably wont be suprised to know that my laptop is also a Sony
